February 19, 2004 - Hot on the heels of its announcement that Killzone would be coming to the U.S. this winter, Sony Computer Entertainment also unveiled yet another original title; God of War. Similar to franchises like Devil May Cry, Rygar, and Castlevania, the game draws its inspiration from ancient Greek mythology and will boast a heavy emphasis on exploration and battle strategy. Broken into three to four acts, the game will also have a strong focus on story-telling and boast tons of magic spells and abilities.

Described by the development team as "Clash of the Titans meets Heavy Metal", God of War equips its as of yet unnamed hero with a pair of sword-like chain weapons that can grab enemies, perform multi-hit combos, and pull off a variety of different aerial attacks. Slight platforming elements and an energy collection system similar to that of Onimusha have been incorporated as well, and players will even be able to use certain elements of their fallen enemies as a weapon (re: Medusa's head, for instance, can be used to turn enemies to stone after you've defeated her).

Details on the story are still being kept relatively quiet. Though we do know that the game is set in Ancient Greece and that the game plays as a flashback while the hero plummets to his death off of a mountain. In the weeks leading up this this suicide, the hero undertook a mission to kill the war God known as Ares, the rest is a mystery. At least we did catch wind of what kind of enemies we can expect to face, however, with the previously mentioned Medusa just one of them. Minotaurs, harpies, skeletons, and undead archers will make up the rogue's gallery as well. Boss monsters and other such foes are still being kept under wraps.

In production for the last two years, God of War still has another year of development in front of it. But from what we've seen so far, it could definitely be one of the PS2's heaviest hitters early next year (it's scheduled for a spring 2005 release). We'll be back later today with more information and a further details on this piping-hot actioner.

Schaut ganz gut aus. ;)

Der Trailer gefällt mir, könnte was werden. Erinnert mich ein wenig an Rygar

Hm, Widerspruch in meinem Hirn.

PS:

die spielfigur sieht imo ziemlich 08/15 -> charakterlos aus.

God of War First Look

At a press event today in Santa Monica, Sony unveiled God of War, a third-person action game in development at Sony's Santa Monica studio. This original game has actually been in development for roughly two years at the Southern California studio under the direction of David Jaffe, a Sony veteran whose work on the early Twisted Metal games and Twisted Metal Black Online proves there's something not quite right about him (but in a good way). At a presentation today, Jaffe discussed God of War and gave a demo to the assembled press that offered a taste of what the game will offer.

God of War's story is a dark tale that makes inventive use of ancient Greek mythology. You're cast in the role of a former Spartan warrior, who, at the start of the game, is about to commit suicide. Before you wonder why Jaffe and company have spent the last two years working on the world's shortest suicide sim, stop--there's quite a bit more to it. The dramatic opener is actually a kickoff for the game's adventure, which is essentially a three- to four-act playable flashback of the last three weeks of the warrior's troubled life. While the exact details of the plot are a little fuzzy, the gist of it is that this brave warrior sets out on a pretty ambitious quest--to kill a god, namely Ares, the god of war. In the game's rich universe, such a grand goal is actually achievable, thanks to Pandora's box, which, as far as the game is concerned, is a powerful weapon. But while a trusty ultimate weapon in box form is handy to have, the package isn't lying around in a cupboard like a can of Raid. To ensure that the right sort of people get the box, the powers that be entrusted an eccentric (read: insane) architect to build a temple to contain Pandora's box. Given the architect's penchant for running with whatever the voices in his head urged him to do, the temple is quite a sight and a real chore to navigate, thanks to a plethora of booby traps and puzzles. It also happens to be built on the back of a titan who's crawling through the desert. This and other story sequences will unfold in more than an hour of in-game cutscenes as well as in multiple endings that should encourage repeated play.

IGN Wertung:

9.5 Presentation
Everything except the painfully obvious text prompts is great. Ditch those the next time around or suffer my wrath.

10 Graphics
Top of its class. The only thing more impressive than God of War's technology is God of War's art.

10 Sound
All of the sound could have been a part of Return of the King and it still would have won Oscars.

9.5 Gameplay
The platforming elements need to take hints from Sands of Time and the puzzles could do with a little more thought and a little less block pushing. Everything else is nearly perfect.

9.0 Lasting Appeal
Hey other developers! See all that wacky crap that opens up after you beat GOW? See how it's all candid and fluff free? Yeah, now you suckers do that, too.

9.8 OVERALL
